One of the most frequently asked questions we get asked is

"What thickness of insulation do I need in my loft?"

Floor Insulation: Building regulation recommends you have at least 280mm of roll Insulation.

Rafter Insulation: Building regulation recommends you have at least 125mm of Kingspan or a similar product. If you are using Thinsulex blanket insulation in conjunction with Kingspan then you only need 75mm of Kingspan. Don't forget you need to keep an air gap between breather membrane and insulation of 50mm, so you DO need to under batten your existing rafters to house the insulation.

Dormer Roofs: To meet Building regulations you have to install 125mm of Kingspan or similar products in between your dormer roof rafters. An alternative method is to fit 100mm in between and 50mm right across the underside (over your joists as well). This is a preferred method by ourselves, and although it is not a requirement as yet it is the better option.

Dormer Cheeks and Face: Building regulation requires you to install 100mm of Kingspan or similar products in between your dormer wall studwork.

Remember! If your architects plans states a different specification than what you've just read above, then you MUST follow your architects plans specifictaion. Each area in each county does have its own requirements, and what we have stated above does not meet all local building regulations nationwide. For example: Listed buildings, Barn conversions, Industrial buildings... All have there own individual requirements.
